NHS Lanarkshire maternal and infant nutrition universal vitamin D scheme

NHS Lanarkshire

Despite many distribution points being closed since lockdown, a contingency plan is in place and the above scheme continues to provide free healthy start vitamins via midwives, health visitors, community health centres and a number of community response groups. This ensures that through free vitamins, the national recommendation for 10mcg vitamin D/day is provided for the following:

  • Pregnant women
  • Breastfeeding mothers
  • All postnatal mothers up until their child is one year old
  • Children from birth until their fourth birthday (NB formula fed babies do not require additional vitamin D if they are receiving more than 500mls formula daily)

Local mothers are reporting that they were not aware of their free entitlement or how to obtain vitamins, as many families are struggling with financial pressures this service is more important than ever. If there are any issues or support required with ordering or details of the scheme, then the maternal and infant nutrition team are available at HeathyStart.VitaminData@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk
